Book Review: White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Synopsis:

One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

NOTE: I received the eARC via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

White Hot Kiss, another one of JLA's books, had me stay up all night reading. It was incredible, accomplishing exactly what I had expected and nothing less - that is, making me pleasantly happy.

I enjoyed every single word, especially all the Roth moments (and no wonder, right?). I was on the verge of tears because of how things went down in the end. But then the last chapter... it certainly gave me hope. I'll definitely hold on to that hope and wait to see what will happen next!

Writing style:
Just like any other JLA novel, WHK was written in an intoxicatingly beautiful way. The author's style is clean and addicting.

Story line:
Layla has never been completely accepted by her adopted family because of her blood issues. She's half warden/ half demon and no one knows what to expect of her. But it gets worse when she's suddenly a target in a mysterious plot to release a brutal evil force on Earth. And let's not forget the handsome demon, Roth, who comes to her aid not once.

Themes:
-There's good in evil and vice versa;
-Sometimes we trust/distrust the wrong people;
-Love hits when most unexpected;
-Accepting who you truly are is the most important step in growing up

Characters:
*Layla: In Bitter Sweet Love, the prequel to this series, I had the impression that Layla's a fragile girl who could easily be broken. But in White Hot Kiss I didn't much see this side of her. Sure, she's not a fearless person, but she doesn't really like depending on others either. She goes alone tagging demons, for crying out loud! She isn't well equipped or trained to dispose of them, but she does alright. I like how she developed from a girl hung up on something she could never have, to a girl who likes to explore her options.

*Astaroth(Roth)was one hot piece of demon spawn. He treated Layla like no one else did (including Zayne)- like an equal. Like someone who should be trusted with the truth and with very important, human race saving stuff. He also helped her (and himself in the process) not to feel lonely, unloved and easily disposed of. Roth was cocky, sure, but he was really a marshmallow inside. What he did, the sacrifice and all... he was incredible! And let's not forget his super creepy (yet friendly) snake, Bambi.

*Zayne... well... I'm with mixed feelings about the dude. He's too weak to show he's attracted to Layla and too childish to keep a grudge in the worst possible moment. Not to mention how much I hated the way he treated Layla when Roth came in the picture. Seriously, just because he could never love her openly, she couldn't be with anyone else either? How dumb and selfish is that?

*Abbot, a dominant Alpha-male who only sees black and white, is the gargoyle clan leader. He's sort of color blind for all things demon related. The truth often must poke him in the eye for him to notice it. Still, he did adopt Layla and took care of her.

*Stacie was a good friend with good presence. She gave good advice from time to time but was also in need of some advice herself.

In conclusion:
I recommend White Hot Kiss for fans of YA paranormal romance books. It's a great joyride!

Book review: Wait for You by J.Lynn

Wait for You

Note: This book is for MATURE readers.

For a JLA book, I think Wait For You was rather weak. I actually have come to expect a very high quality of writing from her, but this book floored it. I'm disappointed, to be honest.

Here is a list of the things I didn't like:
1. There were lots of errors, misspellings, punctuation missing... It needs a lot of editing.
2. The storyline was weak. I was expecting something major happening, but was disappointed that my expectations went to the wind. *SPOILER* I wasn't expecting the messages Avery received to be from another victim. This simplified the plot way too much. I totally expected a psycho stalker, and if that had been the case, the story would've turned out much better. *END OF SPOILER*
3. The story was too...

Book review: Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Onyx (Lux, #2)What can I say? I am in love with this series, and with Daemon. Duh!
Honestly, I like the Lux series more than the Covenant... Greek mythology somehow can't capture my attention all that much. But aliens??? Heck yeah!

So, in this installment, we get to see a lot more of the good side of Deamon. I mean, he has his jerk-o moments, and I love him for those too! But also, there are those sweet moments, when I just wanted to kiss him senseless. Or be kissed senseless, doesn't matter. Not really. LOL

Anyway, Onyx is the turning point of this series, I think. So many things happen, so many fates are changed, that the reader is about to explode! Even though I'd known what was to happen, sort of, I was totally surprised by HOW it happened and WHY. I was left with my mouth hanging open for more when I finished the last page, and gosh! I just couldn't handle to wait and got into Opal right away. Addictive much?

Cover reveal: Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Amazing cover to the third book in JLA's LUX series! I am really excited about the book, and the blurb and cover are just awesome! Check them out!

No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well... There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different... And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger... and they know it.

Intrigued yet??? I sure am, even though I'm still waiting for my copy of Onyx to arrive. :)) I honestly can't wait!!

Book Review: Pure by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Oh, wow! If you guys had been following my reviews, you know that I just read Half-Blood last week. And what do you know, I loved it. Which is why I got Pure next and finished it in two days. And it was absolutely fabulous.

Jennifer's story telling has definitely improved even more and I found myself in Alex's world as if it were mine. That happens rarely, so it's definitely important to me. I loved the structure and development of each scene, the way they grew in intensity and left me longing for more.

And the characters got even more interesting here.

Book Review: Half-Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Half-Blood (Covenant, #1)

Here's a book I'd wanted to read for a while, but never got the chance to get to. Now that my friend Kay gave me a copy for my birthday, I'd made sure to go ahead and plunge in the Covenant Series adventure.

And boy, I don't regret it at all!

I loved the story, the narrative, the romance, and the characters. I can say that there wasn't even one thing lacking.

The concept of the Greek gods and their plethora of offspring was interesting. The forbidden connection/relationship between pure bloods and half bloods was something that made me read on, just so I could see if the characters would find a way to overcome it. Naturally, it wasn't done in this installment, so I'll be definitely going on to the next one!

#DaemonInvasion: Meeting JLA in Jaxville, FL

Umm, yeah you'd think I've been lucky enough to actually meet JLA in person, but unfortunately I'm a continent and an ocean away from the US atm. So, I made my sister go to one of Jennifer's book signings in Jacksonville, Florida! And guess what sis said? "She's very nice!" And sis bought Obsidian for me to get it signed, and got Onyx for free!!! Signed as well!!! HOW FREAKING AMAZING IS THAT, HUH??? Now I only need to wait a couple of months for my parents to bring the books to me ;)

Anyways, let's get you some pictures then.

So here we have my absolutely lovely sister and Jen Armentrout. Sis says JLA's 5'5'' tall, but she seems a bit taller to me (unless she was wearing heels or something). And yes, I wish I was there too. But guess what? Without my sis I wouldn't even have these awesome pictures to share with you guys. In my opinion, I have THE BEST, MOST AMAZING AND SUPER COOL SISTER IN THE WORLD :))) No offense to all other sisters out there :DD
Here my sis is among the #daemoninvasion crew: Jen, Stela and Pepe.
Aaaaand... this is my free, SIGNED copy of pre-release ONYX!!!!!!! How amazingly awesome is that, huh??
And of course, OBSIDIAN is in the pile as well.

Waiting on Wednesday #8 and Book Tag!!!

OMG I RECEIVED A BOOK TAG!!!
I've never been tagged before, so that feels kind of weird LOL

Book Tag Rules:
1. You must post the rules.
2. Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post and then create ten new questions to ask the people that you have tagged.
3. Tag eleven people and link to them on your post.
4. Let them know you’ve tagged them!

Questions from Maghon @ Happy Tails and Tales

1. What’s your favorite quote from a book-or just a saying of some sort?

There's this one from a book I read last week that kind of stuck in my mind. It goes like this (backstory: a guy is supposed to fix a wall for this wealthy family. The woman asks him how long it's gonna take. He says): "Two weeks give or take a week or two."
2. Who’s your favorite best friend of a character in a book and why-basically the support group LOL? (example, I LOVE Emma, who is Kaylee’s best friend in the Soul Screamers series by Rrachel Vincent cuz she is a totally awesome friend)

I think Hermione Granger is the bestest bud on fiction earth :)

3. What’s the most important to you, the plot, the characters, or the writing style?

Okay, I say all of them, because without a plot I'd just skip around or leave the book altogether. Without a good writing style, I'd be distracted and totally annoyed. Without strong characters - well, what's there to read??

4. Since we are all ladies… who do you prefer, the good guy or the bad boy?

Truth is, the bad boy is always a good mushy person on the inside. So definitely him :)) Although, sometimes the good guy turns up bad too LOL Perhaps that's why I can't pick between Will and Jem or Nash and Tod.

5. What is it that makes you want to blog about books?

Many reasons for that: my passion for books; keeping tags on my reading; my desire to share my opinions on books and of course connecting with people with similar interests :)

6. since I can never chose, name your top 5 (or whatever number you want) authors?

Oh, that's easy:
1. Cassie Clare
2. Rachel Vincent
3. Robin Hobb
4. J.K. Rowling
5. Tahereh Mafi
6. too many others LOL

7. Also, since I can never chose, what’s your top 5 (or whatever number) series (or stand alone books)?

Hmmm, another easy one:
1. TMI
2. TID
3. Soul Screamers
4. Harry Potter
5. Perfect Chemistry
6. that list can go on forever, so let's just stop on 5, shall we? ;)

8.  I am also stealing from Karla, but who are your top 5 book boyfriends & what series are the from ( so I can also stalk them too LOL )?

Hahahaha, stalking book boyfriends is awesome!
1. Jace Herondale - TMI
2. Noah - The unbecoming of Mara Dyer
3. Carlos Fuentes - Rules of Attraction
4. Cricket Bell - Lola and the Boy Next Door
5. Carter - Sophie&Carter

9.  If there was one book, that you could read over and over again, what is it?

Any of the books/series I mentioned above. Although, Harry Potter is my most favorite of them all.

10.  tell me something you want me to know about you (try for it not to be about books)… example: I’m a serious animal lover and advocate… I have just decided not to finish vet school and to open up a nonprofit to help both animals and children… it’s a long story with a complicated description, but I want to HELP both animals and kids, especially the handicapped of both :)

Well, I love spending time in nature. Mostly places untouched by human hand. Like meadows in the middle of forests with clean water springs and such :)) Does that count?

And I guess now I've got to tag 11 (un)fortunate people LOL. Okay, here goes:

1. Sara @ http://uponalovestory.blogspot.com

2. Jessirae @ http://jessiraelloyd.blogspot.com

3. Anna @ http://www.literaryexploration.com

4. Anna @ http://bookstobrightenyourmood.blogspot.com

5. Carly @ http://fictionfascination.blogspot.com

6. Sarah @ http://www.thebooklife.com

7. Jennifer @ http://somelikeitparanormall.blogspot.com

8. Jessi @ http://www.otherwhere.co

9. Chelsea @ http://booksturnbrains.blogspot.com

10. Kristin @ http://growingupya.blogspot.com

11. Alison @ http://www.alisoncanread.com

Okaaay, now the questions. That would be the hard part I guess.

1. When the tension in a book is too much to handle, what do you do?
2. Where do you like to read? Your most favorite place?
3. Is there a book that made you cry with real tears in some scenes and laugh heartily in others?? Which one?
4. Do you have a page limit when choosing your books?
5. While reading, what else do you do?
6. Since Maghon asked mainly about boys, I'm gonna turn feminist. So, who is your most favorite heroine and why?
7. If you receive a book for review, but half-way through you decide that no matter how hard you try it doesn't grab your attention, what do you do?
8. Do you write negative reviews if you really don't like a book? What would you say?
9. If a book's cover looks really hideous, but you've heard nice things about the story, would you read it?
10. What would you do if you come home and find your most favorite book chewed by your dog?

Whew!!! Exhausting!! All book questions, so that should be easy for you ladies :)))

Now onto my WAITING ON WEDNESDAY

Photobucket

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly blog post by Jill over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights releases we're eagerly awaiting.

This week, I'm limiting myself to just one title.

Title: Pure
Series: Covenant
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Expected publication date: April 3rd, 2012

Summary:
There is need. And then there is Fate...

Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome--especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom--so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do--and sacrifice--for her.

When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies--lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon... and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude... or killing her.

When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.

Why I'm waiting on it: Well, to be honest, I haven't read the first book or the prequel, but I like this author and I hear really good things about this series. So I thought, I'd just read them all when Pure comes out. This way I won't really have to wait for anticipation ;)

So how about you?? What are you waiting on this Wednesday?????????

Oh, and let me remind you all of my awesome giveaway that's going on until the 29th!!! Don't forget to sign up!! The button that will lead you to it is in the top left hand side bar, and the prizes are, well... you should see for yourself :)))
