Excerpt:

The assassination changed everything.
On the day Crown Princess Chandrea Averill was born, the entire Kingdom of Averill celebrated. The streets of Cellia, her capital city, were overflowing with people honoring the birth of the new heir. Food and drink were plentiful and the mood of those gathered was joyous. Songs and laughter echoed gaily off the walls of the great stone buildings.
Those in the know speculated on what powers the crown princess would eventually develop, as no female born of the queen’s lineage ever had the same powers as those who came before her. The form and strength of the magic varied from female to female, but – without fail – magic was present in some form.
The merrymaking went on for hours into the night, and all at the Llireva Palace celebrated. Wrinkled old men sat in the corners, smoking their pipes and spinning grand and fanciful tales of the Averill family. Small children gathered at their feet, listening raptly to tales of magic and bravery. Gaily dressed dancers spun and swirled as the eager audience clapped to the rhythm. Jewels glittered and gleamed in the warm candlelight as they moved, dazzling the eye.
As the night eased into the early morning hours, those who should’ve retired long ago still remained. Sleepy-eyed and =yawning, they nevertheless continued with the celebration even as the moon set on the horizon and dawn approached. Drinks were handed out generously, and drunken, happy people roamed the palace. Staggering about, their laughter filled the hallways of the grand palace. Guards became lackadaisical about their duties, laughing and drinking with their friends as they came wandering by.
This made the attack on the Llireva Palace and those inside exceedingly simple.
The assault was ruthlessly calculated and seamless. Having been there for hours, posing as drunken guests, the invaders easily overtook and dispatched the inebriated guards. Thousands of the enemy swarmed over the palace, slaughtering all in sight, whether guest or staff. Swords and knives flashed in the candlelight, and terror-filled screams filled the warm night air.
Taken completely by surprise, the guests and staff were easily overcome. Some tried to fight back, but were ruthlessly cut down where they stood. Stepping carelessly over the bloodied bodies of the dead, hard-faced officers ordered their men to look for the king, queen, and the newly-born crown princess. The enemy soldiers scattered, each keen to be the one to find the royal family and draw first blood.
One loyal servant – Adelaide – was tasked with caring for the new crown princess while the queen recovered. Like the queen, Adelaide was a powerful sorceress, and served in the capacity of royal advisor and friend to the queen.
After giving birth, the queen had been exhausted and was resting peacefully in her chambers, while the king attended to her. Princess Chandrea was in the nursery, being cared for by Adelaide. So, when the assassination of the king and queen occurred, the princess was nowhere to be found. Enemy soldiers then spread out in search of the newborn.
Unknown to the intruders, in the days prior to her birth, protective spell webs had been cast by Adelaide and the queen in the hallways of the family wing. These spells prevented unauthorized access to the nursery by causing an agonizing death. The magic also alerted the creator of the spells of anyone entering the space. Unfortunately, the queen had been too wearied and depleted from giving birth to act upon the warnings that had been sent by her spells, and thus, she and the king soon perished. But Adelaide was not at such a disadvantage. As the assailants crossed her protective spells, she was alerted immediately by their piercing screams as the magic seared the flesh from their bones.
Adelaide quickly picked up the baby, and with an urgently muttered spell, opened a hidden passageway known only by the royal family and their most trusted advisors. Slipping out of the nursery, she turned and sealed the door with a wave of her hand, eliminating any chance that any marauders lucky enough to have a sorceress strong enough to penetrate the defensive spells could follow.
Rushing down the stairs, holding the princess close to her bosom, she finally reached the bottom. There she entered the back of a large cave. Moving quickly forward to the front, she found herself looking out at the dark expanse of the Averill Bay, named after the royal family who ruled the bordering land. She turned and gently laid the baby in a small depression in the rock, sat beside her, and allowed herself to momentarily succumb to her grief and fear. Adelaide knew that for the invading soldiers to have gotten as far as her protective shields, they would have had to defeat the queen first— and she would have been in no condition to fight them off.
Sitting quietly for a few moments to collect herself and her thoughts, she was able to form a plan of action, and to gather the resolve for what she knew would be required from her.
Taking a deep breath, she stood and faced the now-orphaned crown princess lying on the rocks. Adelaide knew without a doubt that if this tiny child were killed, all hope for Averill, and the surrounding kingdoms and cities that made up Lyrunia, would be lost. The freedom and peace they’d known under the reign of the Averill family and the Triad would make way for a dark and violent time. Above all else, Princess Chandrea must survive not only this night, but also grow safely to adulthood so that she could take her rightful place on the throne.
Raising her hands into the air, Adelaide urgently weaved them back and forth as she cast her spells. Many hours passed as she chanted through the night, knowing that in the palace above her, an intense search for the princess was being conducted, and that she and the baby could be discovered at any time. Her voice grew hoarse and her arms weary, but still she labored on, until, finally, only one more spell needed to be cast.
Sweat-soaked and exhausted, she reached down and picked up Princess Chandrea. Expecting that this would be the last time she held this dear, tiny child, Adelaide cuddled her close for a few moments. Then, looking at the precious little wrinkled face, she gazed directly into the princess’s eyes, and cast her last spell.
Bright, white light blazed forth from the infant, transforming the cave into a dazzling, glittering chamber. Princess Chandrea slowly rose from Adelaide’s hands until she hung suspended in the air. The soft blanket covering her fell unnoticed to the floor. Adelaide’s hands moved in harmony with her voice as she chanted the final spell that would transport the crown princess from Itova—the world into which she’d been born—to another one. The only place that she would truly be safe until she reached adulthood and her powers had fully manifested.
Air swirled madly about the infant and the light grew brighter and stronger. Then, with the sound of a massive thunderclap and a final burst of brilliance, the crown princess vanished.

Book review: Mine To Spell by Janeal Falor

Synopsis:

Cynthia has always hidden from her father’s hexes behind her older sister. When her family gains independence unheard of for women, she’s relieved that her days of harsh punishments are over. But as her seventeenth birthday approaches—the typical age to be sold to a new master—death threats endanger her sisters. She now faces two options: run or meet society’s expectations.

For once, Cynthia isn’t going to let her older sister shield her from the problem. She’s going to prove to herself, her sisters, and society that her family isn’t a threat to their traditions. She willingly chooses to be purchased by a new master. A bold step that takes her somewhere she never thought she would go and to a man she might possibly fall in love with. With his help, she may just find a way to save her sisters while discovering how to stand up for herself. If she lives long enough.

NOTE: I received the eARC from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Mine to Spell was not as captivating as the prequel. Sure, I kept on thinking "just one more chapter", but at the same time, I couldn't feel the same stir inside me.

The beginning disappointed me a little because 1) I didn't expect to be reading Cynthia's story and 2)it proceeded rather slow. Also, the events puzzled me a little and the answers I got to my questions weren't all that satisfactory.

I'm still unsure how Cynthia managed to conquer all those important milestones in a society that hates all things female. Yes, she had powerful magic in her blood, but she was largely untrained.

Writing style:
Falor has done a good job continuing her bestselling Mine Series with this new installment. The book is a page-turner, well written and enthralling.

Story line:
Like I said above, this was Cynthia's story. I guess my opinion was a bit biased because I was a strong Serena supporter. Maybe that's why Cynthia's POV and adventures couldn't grab me all that much. For some reason, I couldn't even enjoy all the fighting and struggles as much as I wished.

Themes:
- Women and their fight for equality and independence in a world where men rule.
- Fear to speak up, fear to be yourself
- Betrayal
- Family is important, but sometimes, it constrains a person too much.

Characters:
Cynthia wanted to save her family from all that they were put through because of Serena's newly acquired freedom. She was brave accepting that marital contract, and even braver breaking it the way she did. And let's not forget to mention the annual tournament. Cynthia really showed the realm what a woman could do when she put her mind to it. I'm still undecided whether that accomplished anything in the end.

Lucas didn't leave such a great impression on me. Cynthia's character threw a bit of shade on him and everyone else.
Still, seeing that Lucas helped her in a time of need, then befriended her and tutored her to fight, I suppose I can say he was helpful for her growth.
I'm not sure whether I felt much for him though. He seemed to be just a side character. Even though he supported Cynthia in all she did, Lucas remained a bit underdeveloped.

Zade and Serena didn't play any big part in this novel. Sure they appeared here and there (which I guess is how it's supposed to be), but I loved them too much and wanted to read more about them. Also, I didn't like how Serena seemed to have shifted gears a bit. She appeared to be growing weak in her determination to abolish the Patriarchal way of thinking.

Blog Tour (trailer + giveaway): Knight of Light by Deirdra Eden

Hi guys,

The Watchers tour runs this September, and I've chosen today as my stop. What should you expect below? Surely not a lengthy post. There's a very nicely made book trailer that I'd recommend you to see. It got me curious about this book so I might be buying it :) Enjoy!

The Watchers Book 1: Knight of Light
Author: Deirdra Eden
Audience: YA
Genre: fantasy

In England, 1270 A.D., Auriella (pronounced yurr-ee-ella) flees her village after being accused of witchcraft. Pursued by nightmarish creatures, she struggles to accept the truth about her humanity. Filled with fairies, dwarves, pixies, dragons, and monsters, Knight of Light is an enthralling tale that will capture the imaginations of readers young and old.
The Watchers Series has been described as Braveheart meets Supernatural. The mythology for the series is based on many theological texts from dozens of sects with correlating themes. Ancient writings include The Dead Sea Scrolls, The Traditional Apocrypha, The Pearl of Great Price, and The Kabbalah.

“The Watchers” are supernatural beings in human form whose duty it is to protect and guard mankind from the armies of darkness. Unfortunately, as the Book of Enoch mentions, some of these Watchers go bad. Although the mythology is based on these texts, Deirdra Eden’s The Watchers Series is written in a traditional fairytale style with a young girl’s discovery of incredible, but dangerous powers within herself, a cast of humorous side-kicks, a quest for greater self-discovery and purpose, and villains of epic proportions.

About the Author

"My goal in writing is to saturate my books with intrigue, mystery, romance, and plot twists that will keep my readers in suspense. I want to see fingerprints on the front and back covers where readers have gripped the novel with white knuckles! Aside from writing, I enjoy jousting in arenas, planning invasions, horseback riding through open meadows, swimming in the ocean, hiking up mountains, camping in cool shady woods, climbing trees barefoot, and going on adventures."

MY REVIEW:

NOTE: I received the eARC via the publisher. My opinion is honest and true and is not influence by my relationship with the publisher.

This book was the most fun I've had with a mythological story ever. It has love drama (though no real romance to speak of), it has a murder mystery, sacrifice, heroism and a number of incredible, well-developed characters who play their roles so well, it's impossible to put any two of them in the same box. They are complex, realistic (as much as any mythological god can be), with depth that has you thinking 'Well, Munz definitely explored all the idiocy of the myths to create something spectacular.'

Writing style:
Dripping with irony and sarcasm in the places where the forth wall came down, Zeus Is Dead is a hilarious account of the stupidity, huge ego and super powers of the Greek gods. Munz's comments in the narrative had me snicker and appreciate his incredible sense of humor.

Story line:
Told from an omniscient POV, there is still a lot hidden from the reader. For example, the true mystery of the story isn't revealed until the exact opportune moment. Zeus Is Dead is the perfect comically dangerous epic adventure, where real monsters meet TV heroes, gods and titans battle each other and the humans save the day.

Themes:
- What makes a book into a worthy epic adventure?
- Greek mythology: the lovely, the ridiculous and the down right idiotic.
- The whims of the gods - how they dictate human life (or do they)
- Where there is power, there should also be knowledge and wisdom, but most of the time there isn't (obviously).

Characters:
Tracy is the most reasonable, down-to-earth person in this story. She's pragmatic and hates being manipulated. Also, love and romance aren't exactly called for where she's concerned - bad breakup and all that. Which is why she gets suspicious of anyone who tries to tell her how in love with her they are. She knows the meaning of loyalty and sacrifice and I liked that about her.

Leif, a geeky personal fallen under the spell of (a.k.a. playful arrow) of a naughty half-god, he is the one to always ask the stupid (and right and difficult) questions. He makes good points from time to time, though he's not the heroic type. He loves sci-fi fiction and calls himself genre savvy.

Apollo, the god of a myriad of things, is the boy to go to. For everything. You want to be healed? He's the right man. You want a sun chariot? Go to Apollo. How about you'd like to know the future? You guessed it - run to Apollo. What's worse is that for some reason he can't say 'no'. He is smart though, reasonable (for a god) and quite likeable.

Thalia, the muse of science fiction (and some other arts and crafts) is an amiable character who can bring humor or sarcasm to a scene, making it even more hilarious than it already is. She has good ideas from time to time, and I really enjoyed her reasoning.

Ares is the most idiotic character of them all. You can always trust him to say something stupid. He's the god of war, but he's more violent than reason dictates. But then reason isn't one of his strong points.

All other characters are incredible as well, but I don't have space or time to mention them all.

In conclusion:
Zeus Is Dead is the perfect read for lovers of mythology, humor and epic adventures. When you pick up this book, just expect the unexpected.

Interview with Desiree Williams

A few weeks back I featured this really pretty cover reveal of Heart Song by Desiree Williams. Wait, you don't remember it? Oh, pity. Well, here it is, an eye candy if there was one!

So anyway, Desiree and I got to chat and I offered to interview here for my awesome readers at YA Story Teller, and she agreed :) Isn't that awesome? I asked her a bunch of questions in the hopes to satisfy everyone's curiosity.

Enjoy!

Me: How do you take your coffee?
Desiree: Extra sweet. =) My fav is the white chocolate mocha from Starbucks. I’m definitely a fan of cream, sugar, and whip cream added to my coffee. Then I pretend there are no calories.

Me: Really? I'm trying to cut back on the sugar. (No, really) If you were given the chance to take the place of one Fairy Tale character, who would you choose?
Desiree: Ariel, although with the condition that I could change into legs whenever I wanted. I’d love to experience her world, but I’d hate to get trapped there.

Me: Ariel? Huh. I guess there is some appeal to the ocean world. Where would a person find you usually?
Desiree: Oh that could be tricky. My schedule changes daily, and where I end up ‘working’ at changes on a whim. You might need a GPS tracker to find me, but Panera is one of my hotspots.
Me: What makes you feel inspired to write?
Desiree: I want my stories to do more than just entertain. Many of us, as we trudge through the day to day activities, need little reminders that we can achieve the impossible, and I hope that my stories can do that. Readers dive into books for an array of reasons, but one I see stand out the most is to escape. I tend to do that myself. When I’m stressed and about to wig-out, I grab a book. I want my tales to give the readers a lingering hope when they escape into them.

Me: You recently released your debut novel, Heart Song. What is your favorite scene in the book? Why?
Desiree: I’m so indecisive, usually it’s hard for me to pick a favorite of anything. If you ever see a lady standing in front of the fountain drinks for more than five minutes trying to figure out which of the selections to pick, that’s probably me. But … if I had to pick one of my favorite scenes from Heart Song, it would be when Jerric and Alanna are reconnected – after Laelynn’s rescue. This scene shows the power and strength of their connection, even though their relationship is still new.

Me: What is the highest goal that you desire to meet as an author?
Desiree: I would love to be a bestseller one day.

Me: Don't we all. :) On another note, how often do you visit the library? The book store?
Desiree: Actually, I’m an avid ebook reader, so I tend to buy ebooks off amazon versus hardcopies from the bookstore. (Me: Smart thing, that. And thank you for not endangering more trees :) ) The library is my friend though, but not for checking out books. I like to work there for the peace and quiet, and I plan to schedule ‘read-at-the-library’ days with my daughter. There is a great – and comfy – kids section at our local library.

Me: How awesome! What's the last book you bought? Have you read it yet?
Desiree: Altered by Shelly Crane, and yes I have read it.

Me: I hope it was as promising as her rating indicates :) How long does it take you to fall in love with a book?
Desiree: If the story is solid, I’m hooked within the first few chapters.

Me: Your favorite book genres.
Desiree: Fantasy would be my number one. Although I do lump in paranormal and contemporary – depending on the story line.

Me: Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?
Desiree: Heather Hildenbrand! She was the wonderful woman that got me rollin’ in self-publishing, and I would love the opportunity to meet her in person one day. We chat on the phone and via email, but not yet in person.

Me: Okay, I'm embarrassed now. I've no idea who she is... but I'm glad she got you into self-publishing! Five deserts that make your mouth water.
Desiree:
    1. Anything chocolate!! (Me: Duh)
    2. Birthday cake Oreo (with milk! I’m a dunker)
    3. Gelato
    4. Sherbet ice cream
    5. Warm apple cobbler with vanilla ice cream (Me: ooooh! Yum!)

Me: What's the most complicated meal you've ever cooked?
Desiree: The first Thanksgiving dinner I hosted – a few years after I got married. I was a hot mess that day! But thankfully nothing was burned and the turkey came out ah-mazing. =)

Me: What are you wearing right at this moment?
Desiree: Aquamarine top with blue jeans and barefooted.

Me: Ooooh! Jeans! No dirty old sweats for you then, huh? You know, authors tend to wear those a lot! I guess I'd better ask, where are you right now?
My house. Dining room table to be more precise.

Me: What's the best thing that could happen to you on an isolated island?
Desiree: Besides getting an awesome tan?! A stress free life. No responsibilities, no worries. Although can my island be a bug free island? If there are spiders that could change my answer drastically.

Me: ROFL!! Yeah, I'd ask for a bug free island too.. although I do enjoy the company of butterflies a lot. If you could take a day off from your everyday life, where would you go?
Desiree: Somewhere fun with the fam. I love taking the opportunity to make as many family memories as I can. Hearing my daughter’s laughter is the best sound in the world.

Me: Yup. I get it all too well! Thank you Desiree for hopping over to YA Story Teller. It was great having you for a cup of extra sweet coffee :)
Desiree: Thanks so much for allowing me to do this interview! It’s been an honor!
