Cover Reveal: Transcending by Venessa Kimball

MY COMMENTS:
I don't think I have much to say about this cover. A pretty natural scene with a translucent girl in the foreground doesn't usually scream 'great cover', but I suppose it's original and has it's own kind of charm.

Book Details:
Title: Transcending the Legacy
Series: Piercing the Fold, book 4

Genre: paranormal / Sci-Fi
Audience: New Adult
Publication date: May 13, 2014

Summary:
With Jescas return from beyond the veil comes the realization that she is part of an ancient and celestial legacy that is much greater than the Sondian and Dobrian rivalry could ever be and the understanding of what has become of our world in the year that she has been gone beyond the veil.
It becomes known that ancient bloodlines and a supernal legacy has linked Jesca, her family, the two men she is torn between, and the team of guardians. With no other guidance but Jescas visions of what this legacy holds for them, the guardians are depending on the divining glimpses she is receiving to put them on the path leading to salvation.
As for our world, the population that has survived the galactic intersection, the climatic shift, and the necessary implantations are being invaded, occupied, and destroyed by the very beings Jesca encountered beyond the veil. The beings intent? To possess our world and stop Jesca and the other guardians from fulfilling the legacy that could save the human race and eradicate them.
Once again, Author Venessa Kimball will take you on a spine-tingling and breath-taking roller coaster ride through a reality that has been set askew, a reality that has surfaced the rim of our known existence, a reality that has ascended unworldly obstacles, and now a reality that must be transcended by one for the survival of all. The question is, will the stakes be too high and the loss be too great for Jesca and the guardians?

Cover reveal: Timespell: Perilous Waters by Diana Paz

MY THOUGHTS:
Okay, I can't say it's not gorgeous. It's beautiful and I like the blue theme going on. There's only one thing that ticks me off about it... The image is the same as the one in ESSENCE by A.L. Waddington. Different colors, but still.

But hey, I'm not judging, okay? I'm just expressing my honest opinion. Besides, even though I'm all for creative and unique, it's hard to come by unused images nowadays. So, cheers!

BOOK DETAILS:

Timespell: Perilous Waters by Diana Paz
(Timespell #2)
Publication date: May 15th 2014
Genres: Science Fiction, Time-Travel, Young Adult

Synopsis:
After nearly losing their lives defeating the creatures of Mythos in Revolutionary France, Julia and Kaitlyn finally understand what Angie has known all along… being a Daughter of Fate isn’t so fun when one mistake can mean their deaths. Haunted by visions and horror-filled memories, the girls have spent the summer honing their newly discovered magical abilities, determined to grow in power and prepare for the uncertain time when the Fates summon them to their next mission.

But their protector Ethan, still embittered by Julia’s betrayal, refuses to engage in the girls’ magical research or power-enhancing spell practice. That is, until his brother’s loyalty to Julia causes him to unwittingly uncover ancient magic greater and more binding than any force the girls have encountered so far. Before the girls or Ethan grasp the full extent of what his brother has done, the girls are jettisoned through time into the madness of the Caribbean during the golden age of piracy.

Only by working together can the girls harness the full power of their magic and secure the world timeline, but with the lives of those close to Angie and Julia at risk, and Kaitlyn designing a dark agenda of her own, all three girls harbor secrets that threaten to drive their fledgling trinity apart. Small treacheries, mounting fear, and the use of dark magic have not gone unnoticed by those trapped within the Nether… those who would stop at nothing to unleash their destruction upon the world once more.

Blog Tour (Review): BLOOD CROWN by Ali Cross

MY POST for this tour is a review. Enjoy reading my thoughts and leave me a comment to share yours!

NOTE: I received the book from the author, as a part of a blog tour promotion.

The moment I laid eyes on this cover, I just wanted to read BLOOD CROWN. Somehow it reminded me of books that were too good to put down.

I was a little disappointed that I didn't get the 100% satisfaction from reading BLOOD CROWN. I guess I had too high expectations and not having them met just didn't work out for me.

Don't get me wrong, the book is a good read, fast paced, packed with action, cute romance and intrigue. But for some reason I couldn't enjoy it as much as anticipated.

Also, there were questions that were never answered, and I felt irritated by it. I'm not going to say what exactly those questions were, because it'll spoil the book, but it did annoy me a little.

Writing style:
I think this is where the problem was. I didn't feel comfortable with the writing style and I can't pinpoint exactly why. What I do know that I was bothered that some scenes, where anticipation should've been built up to a climax, were wasted on descriptions that could've been postponed or cut out altogether. I wasn't exactly keen to know what each character was wearing at any given time. But I did want to have tension working in my mind.

Story line:
I am not such a great lover of series. In fact I prefer standalone books. Yet, BLOOD CROWN cried with the need to be a trilogy. Why? Everything was packed into such a short time, it felt unrealistic and impossible. I did like the story line - it had good reasoning behind it - but the shortness of it made me think that it was just not enough.
After all we're talking about humans defeating a super advanced android population. It should've taken a bit longer than a week, don't you think?

Themes:
- There's always hope.
- Humans are always meant to win.
- Sometimes, androids can love.
- Prophesies always come to pass.
- Love lasts forever.

Characters:
Archibald was the Servant android to the Royal Family of the West. He was the person who raised the little princess, Serantha, until her 10th year of age. He was supposed to teach her everything she should know about the world, about herself, about her future as a queen, wife and mother. But the Mind (a group of Elite androids) had different plans. Yet, even in their hands, Archibald still remains loyal to his little charge. He never abandons her, always protects her and is ever ready to sacrifice himself for her well-being.

Nicolai is the prince of the East. He's got his heart in the right place. He knows what the Mind is capable of, and he wants to protect the human race from the android's plans of destruction. Unfortunately, his father doesn't share his opinions, so Nicolai is banished/leaves his kingdom and joins the rebel force.
Now, let me tell you, I liked Nicolai's character. He was bold and brave and didn't hesitate to help those who needed rescuing. Sometimes he was even rash and stupid, acting without really thinking, but he always did it for the best of the human race.
Serantha always described him as proud and serious and scowling. I never really saw him like that, so I'm sort of confused. Sera's supposed to know this guy because of their bond and stuff. But it seems that she has no idea who Nicolai really is as a person.

Serantha is the little princess, Archibald's charge. She went missing after her parents' murder and was assumed dead. Thus, no one hoped that the prophesy of the Blood Crown would ever be fulfilled. Yet, Sera lived. A lowly life, full of scorn, brutality, distrust and no hope. But it was life nonetheless. I guess she was brave, since she always stood up to the guards and protected her roommates from assaults and such.
Now she's 19 years old. She's hated by the humans around her, and the guards just want a piece of her because she's different. But no one knows who she is. She doesn't either.
When she realizes she's a ruler of an Empire, I think it's too much for her and she makes a bunch of stupid crazy decisions. I'm not sure she knows how to be wise or how to analyze events and consequences. It's weird that she should need technology help to do it too. It sort of feels like ordinary people aren't able to make wise decisions, which is untrue.

Galen was the evil Elite android who wanted to destroy mankind and rule the Universe. I understand his reasoning. He's selfish and degraded and has no honor. I'm not sure I know how he got there, since he's, you know, artificial intelligence, and could've been controlled, mind-wiped etc. etc.
He wasn't a good villain, to be honest. Sure, he had a bunch of people killed, ships destroyed, and so on, but he lacked in some aspects.

In conclusion, BLOOD CROWN was an interesting read with a lot of potential. It was crammed in a single volume, but I think it would've been done better as at least a duology.

My rating is:

Exclusive Excerpt:
“Wake up!”
I feel as though someone has pinched my mind, shaken my brain around, and asked it to work again. I try to open my eyes, but they’re heavy and clouded and I begin to worry that maybe they are open. I just can’t see.
            “Wake up!”
I flinch at the sound, so close to my ear, yet far away. Or maybe it’s my understanding that’s far.
“Ari. We’re out of time. Wake up!”
My mind flashes into focus, but I don’t open my eyes. I can feel, sense, everything around me. The beeping sounds that alternate in succession. The breathing in and out of the person beside me, yet I can’t make out who the person is. Even if it’s a he or she. But what I can sense is danger, danger so intense that the hairs on my arms are at full attention and the xylem in my body has sparked, causing me to instantly want the person beside me dead. If he or she—it—is dead then I am free to escape, even if I have no idea what or who I am escaping from.
            “Fine. Just call this payback.”
I have one second to realize that the person is Cybil, before a gut wrenching pain slices through my left arm. My eyes snap open and she’s in front of me, so pale and rattled that she looks like a ghost of herself. I glance down at my arm to see that Cybil ripped out my IV and is now holding it in her hand like a toy.
“I warned you. Look. This likely triggered an alarm. We have to get out of here. Right now.”
I try to nod, but my body is sluggish and I’m not sure that I’ve moved at all. Cybil loops her arm under my back to help me sit up, and instantly the room begins to move in and out of focus. “What happened to me?”
            “They happened. Now move.”
I start to climb off the table I’m on, when Cybil’s eyes round out and her body begins to quake. “Cybil? What is it?” I reach out for her, just as her body collapses to the ground and a metal door behind her slides open. Two men dressed in thick white suits rush in, followed by a shorter man. A man I recognize.
“Hello, Ari. Nice to see you awake,” Kelvin says. Kelvin Lancaster. I remember him from the talks with Earth, how he seemed to be in control, how everyone around him acted uneasy in his presence. Like he was more enemy than friend. I start to respond to him, when I feel a sharp pinch in my arm. I look up to see another white-suited person behind me, syringe in hand. I try to push the person away. I try to open my mouth to scream. But suddenly my lips feel tingly, my arms limp. I focus back on Kelvin, on the grin on his face, and then the world around me disappears, and I’m once again alone in the darkness.
